Top dancers of the Boston ballet and American Ballet Theater star in the gala that is organised for the fourth time.
The Grand International Ballet Gala brings an exceptional amount of international top expertise in classical ballet and contemporary ballet to Tampere. Now organised for the fourth time, the gala has become one of the highlights of Tampere Hall’s autumn. In addition to the traditional gala programme consisting of short snippets, you can also see entire dance performances of top choreographers at Tampere Hall. The gala is organised in cooperation with Lappeenranta Ballet Gala.
One of the gala’s most anticipated performers is the Russian top dancer Daniil Simkin. Simkin is a winner of the Helsinki International Ballet Competition and ballet competitions in Varna and Jackson. He has worked at the Vienna State Opera, among other places, and is currently dancing at the Berlin State Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre (ABT).
The Latvian National Ballet will arrive at the gala with six dancers and Elza Leimane’s performance Images of Presence. The Ballet of the Brno National Theatre brings with them the piece Gnawa by choreographer Nacho Duato. This is the first time the performance will be seen in Finland. The group will also perform scenes from the ballet classic Romeo and Juliet. The Ballet’s new artistic director Mario Radacovsky is responsible for the new choreography for the classic. The visit of the Ballet of the Brno National Theatre will celebrate to the first Romeo and Juliet ballet in the world that was performed in Brno 80 years ago.
There will also be world-class Finnish dance on stage when Maria Baranova from the Boston Ballet will perform partnering with Lasha Khozashvili, the principal dancer of the same ballet house. Elina Miettinen from the American Ballet Theater (ABT) will be flying in from New York bringing with her the fresh solo by choreographer Jorma Elo. In addition to these, principal dancer Emilia Vuorio from the Brno Ballet adds Finnish flavour to the gala.
The gala will also include the duet Black Swan by Marco Goecke, one of the most sought-after European choreographers. The duet will be interpreted by Amelie Demont and Duccio Tariello, the brightest young stars of Ballet Dortmund.
The programme will be completed during spring 2019.
