One of Portugal’s best-known fado singers, Cristina Branco, arrives to Tampere Hall in May. She is a new-generation Portuguese fado star, with a sophisticated and nuanced tone of voice. Cristina Branco has published around a dozen albums and has performed live worldwide. She is a strong singer who wants to keep the folk song tradition alive in her own way, and her songs combine fado with timeless lyrics, superb arrangements, and masterful musicians.
Her latest album, Branco, was released this year. The names behind the songs are top Portuguese musicians, such as Pedro da Silva Martins and Luís Martins, Mário Laginha, Kalaf, and António Lobo Antunes.
Cristina Branco (1972) first came to know about fado music by listening to her grandfather singing the songs around the house. She was more interested in Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald though, and dreamed of becoming a jazz singer. However, she became increasingly interested in fado over the years, and began singing the songs to audiences.
