Ladysmith Black Mambazo performs at the Tampere Hall in April!
Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African ambassador of choir music that rose to fame from Paul Simon’s album Graceland, performs at the Tampere Hall April 28th. The male choir that performs mbube style vocals a cappella has been singing for equality for decades, and conquered the world with their unique sound.
The Ladysmith Black Mambazo choir was formed in 1964 in South Africa by Joseph Shabalala. The choir singing, stemming from the musical traditions of the Zulu tribe, is immensely harmonic and soft, yet conveys a strong message. Born during the most strict apartheid politics, the group brought hope to the oppressed population of South Africa with their songs.
The loving and warm sound of Ladysmith Black Mambazo received world wide fame with Paul Simon’s album Graceland in 1986. Since then, the South African a cappella group has received international recognition and won five Grammy awards. The latest Grammy was received in 2017, when the album Shaka Zulu Revisited was recognizes with the title Best World Music Album.
The music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo also gave strength to freedom fighter Nelson Mandela during his long years in prison. When Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed at the party. A year later the choir sang at the party held in honor of Mandela’s election as the president of South Africa.
Today, the leader and lead singer of the group is Joseph Shabalala’s son, Thamsanqa Shabalala, who has preserved the choir’s style that has lasted over 50 years. The concert in April is in for a rich dose of peace, love and balance; singing and dancing as only Ladysmith Black Mambazo can.
