The beloved opera classic La Bohème returns to the Tampere Opera after 40 years!

Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème will be produced by the Tampere Opera in 2019. The opening night of the opera will be on Saturday 9 February 2019 in Tampere Hall. Even though La Bohème, which takes place in Paris, is one of the most popular operas in the world, it was last performed at the Tampere Opera in 1978. The work will be directed by Kari Heiskanen, who is one of the top opera and theatre directors in Finland. The roles will be played by artists such as Helena Juntunen, who is one of the most successful sopranos in Finland, baritone Arttu Kataja, who has been made a member of Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, baritone Waltteri Torikka, who charmed his audience in Finnish premieres last year, and soprano Suvi Väyrynen, who won the Lappeenranta National Song Contest in 2016. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by the experienced opera conductor Alberto Hold-Garrido.

Ticket sales for the loyal customers of Tampere Hall will be opened on Friday 16 February 2018 at 9am. The tickets will be available for general sale on Monday 19 February 2018 at 9am at the Tampere Hall ticket office and the Lippu.fi service.

‘La Bohème is one of the classic opera stories, and it depicts tragic love in an unforgettable way. Our interpretation starts with the hopefulness and joyfulness of youth. The young men in the story are leading their carefree lives, concentrating on themselves and avoiding responsibility, when the sudden death of a beloved shows them how cruel life can be. Suddenly, the young people are made to experience the fragility and value of life and feel the depth of true love. In addition to being about the limits of being human, our opera is also about the power of life’, says director Kari Heiskanen. ‘We will set our beautiful interpretation in the colourful Paris of the late 1950s and early 1960s. That period is both modern and exotic at the same time, and, even though it is fully recognisable to many of us, there is still some beauty of the past to it’, continues Heiskanen.

Soprano Helena Juntunen will perform the main role of the seamstress Mimi in this Tampere Opera production. ‘The beauty of La Bohème lies in the fact that the story and the characters are true and real regardless of the time and place. When you have the courage to let yourself love, you also take a big chance – to me, that is the core message of this opera’, says Juntunen. Playing the role of Mimi has played a central part in Juntunen’s life, as well: she has performed the role of Mimi in opera productions three times before this, and she has also named her daughter Mimi.

The roles in the La Bohème production of Tampere Opera will be played by artists including soprano Helena Juntunen (Mimi), soprano Suvi Väyrynen (Musetta), baritone Arttu Kataja (Marcello), and baritone Waltteri Torikka (Schaunard). The entire cast of the opera will be announced in the spring of 2018. The set will be designed by Janne Siltavuori, who is known for his impressive theatre work, and Tiina Kaukanen, who has specialised in movie costumes, will be responsible for the costume design and Olli Lehtinen for lighting. As expected, the Tampere Opera Choir and the Tampere Opera Children’s Choir will sing in La Bohème.

The opera will be performed in Italian and subtitled in Finnish and English.
